The ROCKONZ Festival is hosted by the Canterbury Education and Community Trust, under the direction of Cecile and Dion Murphy through their Event Management Company, Absolutely Everything Ltd. Professional entertainers, whose careers span 50 years, and have performed and entertained throughout New Zealand and overseas on Stage/Radio/Television and Private Functions through to the present day.
Dion, is also known internationally for his boxing career during which he won both Amateur and Professional NZ Lightweight titles, and retired undefeated from his professional career, in the late 1960’sWhy hold the Festival?
The Canterbury Education and Community Charitable Trust’s aim is to raise money for charitable purposes. The CEC Trust ran the successful Canterbury Careers Expo for 10 years, raising over $100,000 for education study grants for young people. Since passing control of the Expo to Coca Cola Amatil (NZ) Ltd in 2003, the Trust is now looking to use the Rock and Roll Festival to meet its charitable aims. The ROCKONZ 2007 chosen charity (Conductive Education Canterbury) received $5,000 from the CEC Trust. The charity causes for 2008 are expected to be those working for Cancer suffers such as Breast and Prostate Cancer.
Why a Rock and Roll Festival?
The Rock and Roll genre is based on “Good Times and Happy Days”. It has great music to listen, sing and dance to. The 1950/60’s teenage life style was simple - Rock and Roll music, local dances, gazing with envy at the cars or motorbikes owned by the lucky few and sharing lots of fun times. Over the past 50 years, the Rock and Roll music/genre has maintained its appeal with a broad spectrum of people of all ages, through the attraction of the music and dance, plus the nostalgia of the stylish classic cars, hotrods and motorbikes. The ROCKONZ Festival brings all these elements together in its programme, running from Sunday 24 February to Sunday 2nd March 2008. ROCKONZ New Zealand Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:
We wish to publicly acknowledge musicians and entertainers who have achieved recognition for reaching and maintaining a high level of excellence throughout their career. Inauguration into the ROCKONZ New Zealand Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is mandated through a committee of ROCKONZ New Zealand Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Board members, who are people with a lifetime of experience in the Rock and Roll Music Industry. ROCKONZ 2007 was a great occasion and a great success. Dion and Cecile acknowledge the input of their team of dedicated friends, fellow musicians, generous sponsors and interested people, who worked whole-heartedly to make the Festival an experience to remember. Without their support, the ROCKONZ Rock and Roll Festival would have remained a dream unfulfilled. Once again, this great bunch of people has indicated they are ready to pick up the task for ROCKONZ 2008.
